Music

It’s a rare moment at MHS if someone, somewhere isn’t making music! Children enjoy music in class throughout their time here, and the opportunities for individual and group music are wide and varied.

Music plays an important part for even the youngest children; class music is taught by a music specialist in the Pre-Prep, and there are frequent opportunities for musical participation in their various productions and special events.  Children in the Pre-Prep can also start to learn an individual instrument, usually from Year 2. As children move up to the Prep school, they continue to enjoy practical music-making in class, (singing, keyboard work, composition) as well as learning theoretical aspects such as pitch, rhythm and notation.

We have our own music suite of practice rooms along with a large and well-equipped music room for class teaching. Instrumental tuition is given by specialist musicians and a high proportion of children in Years 3-8 take up this option. In addition to the traditional orchestral instruments, lessons are also offered in recorder, singing and the ever popular electric guitar and drums. A number of instruments are available for hire and, at appropriate times, children are entered for external music exams. The most able are also prepared for scholarship applications to senior schools.

Informal concerts are given two or three times a term and performers may range from experienced musicians to those who have had little more than a few lessons.  We have a large senior choir and a smaller chamber choir for more specialist work, as well as a junior choir and Year 3 singing club.  In addition, there are string and brass ensembles and even an MHS rock group! All in all, MHS is a very musical place!
