Art

“Art is fun, always creative and sometimes rather messy!” (Beatrice, age 10)

Colourful, fun, inspiring and displayed everywhere, Art at MHS is very much part of all our lives! From the youngest children to Year 8 scholarship candidates, everyone is encouraged to get involved and with so much happening in this vibrant and busy department, that’s easy to do.

Cross-curricular projects with English, Spanish and History and multi-cultural projects jostle for position in a packed Art curriculum. Children paint with 3ft long paintbrushes, work with paper maché, draw self-portraits, learn observational drawing in our grounds, develop their sketchbooks and enjoy every moment.

Exhibitions, special Art days, visits to galleries, art clubs and visits from practising artists all enhance the classroom curriculum. The honour of being chosen as ‘Artist of the Week’ or having work displayed in the dining room remains a great incentive for the children to produce the best work they can. The older children are, in fact, encouraged to appraise their own work through a self-evaluation sticker system; an important skill to learn for later life!

Talented children at the top of the Prep school are prepared for Art scholarships to Senior schools with extra Art sessions and individual coaching and in recent years they have enjoyed successes which are a great credit to them.

Head of Art, Rowena McWilliams sums up the philosophy of her department: “Art is about experiencing and experimenting. Good art does not all look the same!”
