Year 8 Leavers' Programme 2020
As the Leavers’ Programme 2020 draws to a close, we can reflect on a fantastic few weeks. Inevitably, with COVID 19 still present and government restrictions in place, the usual array of trips and activities had to be cancelled.
However, Year 8 enjoyed a unique programme of events and activities ‘online’ to entertain them, while parents kindly enabled them to meet up outside of school and offered further opportunities to socialise ‘in person’ and have fun.
After a wonderful set of exam results, Year 8 rose to the challenge of creating a Leavers’ Book that will stand as a wonderful piece of memorabilia in years to come. Each pupil created pages to reflect their time at MHS, using photos and relaying memories from the past 10 years as well as adding pop art self-portraits. Huge thanks to all the Leavers’ Book staff team for their collaboration, support and hard work in helping to bring it all together. Year 8 also transformed themselves into teams of entrepreneurs for the Dragon’s Den pitches, sang beautifully for their bilingual song, drew comic strips in Latin, performed for the Summer Concert, studied famous figures and turned their hand to writing, filming and editing news reports to reflect their time at MHS. To round it off and to celebrate in MHS tradition, we enjoyed an online bake off. Independent taste testers from home were generous in their praise for the Year 8 baking skills and we saw some wonderful creations. Much fun was had by all throughout the programme of events and it was definitely a case of “the more you put into it, the more you get out of it”; an important lesson for life.
As government restrictions eased, the MHS leadership team delivered the wonderful news that we would be able to gather together for the final week, albeit socially distanced. It enabled Year 8 to bring their time at MHS to a fitting finale. As well as enjoying lots of fun, sporting activities outside, Year 8 completed their Relationships and Sexual Education workshops, created apps, completed a photography challenge and thoroughly enjoyed their “quiz”, hosted by Mr Little and Mrs Walker.
The week came to a fitting end with the Leavers’ Chapel and the presentation of their Leavers Book and pen.
Huge thanks goes to all the staff at MHS for their contributions to the Leavers Programme. The Year 8 pupils rose to the challenge and helped to make their final half term at MHS a wonderful, fun and happy memory and bring their time to a fitting conclusion. We wish them all well and every happiness in the next stage of their life and hope that they will keep in touch.
