Mr Whitlock, one of our amazing Pre-Prep Teaching Assistants, tells us of his path into teaching ...............
What inspired you to be a teacher?
From an early age, I have always been fortunate enough to be surrounded by motivating, engaging and understanding teachers. It was always a career that I wanted to pursue, as I too wanted to have the same impact on young people that my teachers had on me. I believe that you really remember the teachers that helped shape the person you are today and felt that it would be amazing to be a role model for children.
Tell us about your path into teaching:
My initial interest came from Year 11 work experience, where I worked at a local primary school. I had the most amazing learning experience and was even asked if I was able to stay for another week! I found it intriguing to be behind the scenes and see everything that Teachers do in order to make the school a happy and exciting learning environment for their pupils. From that moment, I knew what I wanted to do and have worked and been fortunate enough to be where I am today. I studied Physical Education at the University of Brighton as I have always been passionate about sport and feel this is an area where I can really guide, encourage and motivate young people.
What do you love most about teaching?
That no two days are the same, I love the variety that a school day brings. I love seeing children progress day to day and helping them discover their interests whilst assisting them with any challenges or concerns they encounter.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve had in a classroom?
Being called ‘Mr Knick-Knock' by a child in Nursery, this has stuck now for some children and I must admit, I might prefer it!
What’s the most important lesson you can teach?
Of course, there are many important aspects to teach young people but I feel that ‘be kind to others’ is one of the most important.
What makes Marlborough House such a special place to be?
From the very first time I walked into Marlborough House I felt a sense of contagious energy that fills you with happiness and excitement, I have been at the school for 2 years and that feeling hasn’t gone. It truly is an amazing place to be every day and I look forward to many more.
