Mrs Budd and Mrs Goldsmith took Year 8 to the Imperial War Museum to see the revamped World War I exhibition.
It is a stunning and worthwhile installation which really captivated our pupils. They will be using the information they gathered to create an independent presentation and reflecting on the value of such visits to their understanding of history.
Their notebooks came back full of findings both written and illustrative. I was privileged to read some of them over the weekend; I could see just how much they had gained from this experience.
One pupil, (Sophie Porteous) was also able to visit the Ashcroft Gallery to see the gallantry medals awarded to a relative for his bravery during WWI. Such a pity that this gallery where so many brave men and women from this country and the Commonwealth are remembered for their bravery in all wars is to close. We then joined the others in the Art Galleries to see the artwork from many wars but in particular the work of the Nash brothers in WWI. Year 8 were also interested in the propaganda posters from WWI and WWII, and I hope to see some in their presentations.
We finished on a more relaxing note after a very intense morning. A picnic in the park rather than the basement lunchroom was enjoyed by us all! We ended with ice cream to celebrate Beatrice’s birthday before walking back to the train.
I should like to thank Year 8 for being a pleasure to take out and being so grown up in their response to the experience.
