A Very Special Afternoon: Year 3 Grandparents’ Tea

Grandparents' Tea was a truly wonderful occasion, enjoyed by both children and grandparents alike. The Year 3 children had been preparing for weeks to make the afternoon memorable, and their excitement was evident from the very start

In the lead-up to the event, the children carefully wrote and sent out handwritten invitations, welcoming their grandparents to join them for tea and a personalised tour of Marlborough House. They also created colourful brochures, proudly sharing their favourite parts of being in Year 3.

When the big day finally arrived, we were blessed with glorious sunshine. The Harrison Building looked splendid, and the air was filled with anticipation as our special guests began to arrive. A happy hum of chatter echoed through the gallery as the children eagerly welcomed their grandparents.

With pride and enthusiasm, the children led tours of their classrooms, showing off their wonderful work and best learning spaces. Many took their grandparents out into the grounds, keen to share their favourite spots to play and explore. One Year 3 boy, clearly impressed by his grandfather’s fitness, was heard saying, “My Grandpa can run a marathon – he doesn’t need to worry about going down the hill to the Dell, he could run all the way to Forest School!”

The grandparents were full of praise for the children’s efforts. Many remarked on the warmth of the welcome and how impressed they were by the children’s beautiful handwriting, careful presentation, and confidence when talking about their work.

At last, the bell rang for tea, and everyone made their way to the dining room for a delicious spread. The highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly the performance of “You’ve Got the Power” — sung with such joy, energy and confidence by Year 3. It was a moment that filled everyone with pride.

It truly was a special way to spend an afternoon — a celebration of family, school, and the unique bond between generations.
