Laird Shepherd, MHS Past Pupil, wins Amateur Golf Championship!

EX MHS pupil wins the 126th Amateur Golf Championship!

We were thrilled to hear that past pupil, Laird Shepherd (MHS 2001-2010), reached the final of this prestigious event which took place at Nairn Golf Club last Saturday. The excitement grew however when we heard that Laird came from 8 down in the 36 hole final, to WIN!

Quite an achievement for a boy who started his golfing career here at MHS. As part of our sport and clubs programme, Mr Tooze, our then Deputy Head, used to take groups of pupils (including Laird then aged around 9) to weekly golf lessons at Dale Hill Golf Club. Laird had shown an interest in golf but hadn’t had any formal lessons.  In his very first lesson the golf pro believed Laird had real talent …. and the rest is now history!

Sporting success runs in the family as Laird’s twin brother, Callum (also MHS 2001-2010) is now a professional jockey based in Newmarket (he rode a winner for Her Majesty the Queen in the same week as Laird's victory!).  Callum rode for the MHS equestrian team in its early days so we follow his success with interest as well. Both boys were sport mad at MHS and this helped them to thrive both academically and in sport in their nine years here and they look back on their time with great fondness for the foundation it gave them.

Golf continues at MHS and our Year 3 and 4’s are able to join Golf Club, taken by Mr Kent who provides an introduction to the sport on a Friday afternoon.

Laird’s victory means that he will be playing in the next three Majors: The Open next month at Royal St George’s, next year's Masters at Augusta National and the US Open at Brookline Massachusetts. He will also be lining up in a European Tour event this September, The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

We wish him every success for the future!
