Geography at Marlborough House fosters an understanding and appreciation of the world we live in and the physical processes that operate within it. It also teaches how our interaction can affect the world and how we are able to deal with the consequences of these interactions.
Geography learning involves a variety of activities, from collecting raw data, visiting geographically interesting locations and using technology to research and present findings. The children have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and competencies – observing, measuring, extracting, locating, collecting, describing, recording, interpreting, analysing, applying, organising and evaluating.
The children are inspired to value local and wider environments and maintain a sense of wonder at the nature and processes of the world around them. Field trips are an essential component of the Geography curriculum giving the children opportunities to make links between their studies in the classroom and the outside world through investigating, first hand, the topics being studied, whether it is a walk around school to investigate weathering or a field trip to look at the sustainability of the Olympic Park in London. Each autumn, Year 8 embark on a residential field trip where the children conduct primary data collection to test hypotheses and write up their findings.
We are delighted that the department was recently awarded a Quality Mark from the Geographical Association in recognition of the excellent that is taught and learnt throughout the school.
